A reminder from the dugout has stayed with Elgin High School senior Adlynn McCracken through every tough at-bat: keep your head up.
When a hitter is struggling at the plate, it can be easy to let frustration carry into every part of the game. But McCracken has learned to look at the bigger picture. Her coaches have reminded her that even when the offense is not clicking, she can still help her team with her glove, her effort and her attitude.
“Anytime I was struggling at the plate, my coaches would tell me to keep my head up because I was going great in the field,” McCracken said. “Some days it only goes one way.”
That perspective reflects the consistency and persistence McCracken has developed during her softball career. A 12th grader at Elgin High School, McCracken competes in both fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. She values the opportunity to represent her school, compete alongside her teammates and keep improving in a sport that has been an important part of her life.
One of her favorite memories came early in her high school career, when Elgin made it to the state tournament during her freshman season. Reaching that stage was a special experience and gave McCracken a firsthand look at what a committed team can accomplish together.
Softball has also connected McCracken with teammates who have made a lasting impact. Ella Melton is one of those teammates. The two have played together since elementary school, creating a friendship that has grown right alongside their time in the game.
“Ella Melton,” McCracken said when asked which teammate has left the biggest impression on her. “I have played with her since elementary school, and she always is there for a pick-me-up when I need one.”
Away from the field, McCracken draws her greatest inspiration from her mom. Seeing her mother raise her largely on her own has motivated McCracken to work toward becoming the best version of herself.
She also appreciates the influence of Mr. Freeman, her favorite teacher, because of his ability to challenge her and encourage her to give her best effort.
As her senior year continues, McCracken is grateful for the coaches who have supported her along the way. She offered special thanks to Coach Garrett, Coach Molina and Coach McClung for pushing her, believing in her and never doubting what she can bring to the team.
