Elgin’s Addison Lunsford – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Arvest Bank

A spot in the starting lineup can feel like a destination. For Elgin High School sophomore Addison Lunsford, earning that opportunity as a freshman was only the beginning.

Lunsford competes in fast-pitch softball, slow-pitch softball and athletics for Elgin, while also playing travel-ball softball. Primarily an outfielder, she has developed the versatility to contribute wherever her team needs her, embracing the utility role that is so valuable in a competitive program.

Her favorite athletic memory came early in her high school career, when she was included in the starting lineup during her freshman season. The accomplishment affirmed the work she had put in and gave her the chance to compete at the varsity level against older, more experienced players.

“It was being in the starting lineup during my freshman year,” Lunsford said of the moment that makes her most proud.
That experience also reinforced an important lesson she continues to carry with her: patience.

“Patience, it might not always be the right time, but eventually it will come,” Lunsford said.

For a young athlete, that perspective is essential. Roles can change, playing time can fluctuate and growth does not always arrive on a predictable schedule. Lunsford has learned to keep preparing, keep trusting the process and be ready when an opportunity arrives.

In the outfield, patience and preparation go hand in hand. A player may spend several innings waiting for a ball to be hit her way, but when the moment comes, there is little time to react. The same readiness applies to her ability to play multiple positions. Lunsford’s willingness to be a utility player reflects a team-first approach and gives her coaches another dependable option.
Her parents remain her biggest source of inspiration. Lunsford said they consistently push her to become the best version of herself, providing the encouragement that helps her stay motivated through both successes and difficult moments.

She also appreciates the impact of Coach Castro, who is her favorite teacher because of the positivity he brought to her day.
“Coach Castro always brightened my day,” Lunsford said.

As she continues through high school, Lunsford hopes her example can reach beyond the field. One of her favorite parts of representing Elgin is the possibility that younger students will watch her and see a leader they can look up to when their own high school careers begin.

Lunsford is grateful for every coach who has invested in her development. She said their belief made a difference, especially during times when she struggled to believe in herself.

“Thank you to all of my coaches that have believed in me and honestly made me the player I am today,” Lunsford said. “When I didn’t have faith in myself, one of them would have.”
