Every time Harper Adair steps onto the track, climbs onto the cheer mat or takes her place on the sideline, she carries a purpose bigger than the event itself. The Elgin High School freshman competes in honor of her grandmother, her “Nini,” whose influence continues to motivate her every day.
Adair participates in track, school cheer and Allstar cheer while also balancing a busy schedule that includes National Junior Honor Society, student council and serving as a football manager. Whether she is running, cheering or supporting her school in another role, Adair said her family and friends provide the encouragement that keeps her moving forward.
Her Nini remains her biggest role model.
“My biggest role model is my Nini,” Adair said. “She passed away September 21, 2024. I do everything in honor of her.”
That inspiration has helped Adair approach athletics with gratitude, dedication and discipline. She believes gratitude has been especially important in her development, allowing her to recognize and appreciate each opportunity that comes her way. Even when injuries or other setbacks have interrupted her progress, Adair has learned to return stronger.
One of her favorite track memories came during last season as she improved in the 400-meter dash.
“I’d have to say my highlight moment in track was getting to progress so much in the 400 last track season and seeing myself finally improve since injuries,” Adair said. “Making the people closest to me proud, whether that was coaches or family, made my heart happy.”
Adair also enjoys the energy that comes with competition. Meets against nearby Cache are among her favorites because of the strong athletes and close-school rivalry. At practice, her 4×100-meter relay teammates bring out another level of competitiveness.
“When we’re not a team, we’re working against each other,” she said. “It makes us all more competitive, but our friendship stronger. They push me to be a better athlete.”
Cheer has played an equally meaningful role in Adair’s life. She credits Paige and Morgan of Reign Athletics with helping her rediscover her love for the sport, improve her tumbling and develop a stronger perspective. A message from Paige, “You never know when it will be your last time on the mat, so give it your all”, has stayed with Adair.
For Adair, representing Elgin means more than putting on a uniform. It means giving her best effort, treating people well and creating a legacy through both her accomplishments and character. Elgin Public Schools offers athletics and activities including track and cheer opportunities for its students.
