The best moments in Aaliyah Rodriguez’s high school career have not always come with a finish-line photo or under the bright lights of a cheer performance. For the Elgin High School junior, the people beside her have made the greatest impact.

Whether she is competing in track, cheering for the Owls or serving in leadership roles around campus, Rodriguez values the relationships that have grown through each experience. The friendships, shared challenges and memories created with teammates have become the highlights she will remember most.

“Honestly, the biggest highlight of my sports career has been the friends I’ve made through all of my sports,” Rodriguez said. “Some of my favorite memories have come from being surrounded by teammates, going through challenges together, and getting to experience so many different moments with people I might not have met otherwise.”

Rodriguez has found two especially important training partners in Kimora Gonzalez and Kyrene Cremer. The trio works to make each other better while also bringing energy and fun to practice.

“They push me to get better while still being able to have fun together,” Rodriguez said. “They make practices more enjoyable, and I know I can count on them to motivate me and keep me going.”

Aaliyah also recognizes the quieter contributors around her. She believes teammate Isabella Hernandez deserves more recognition for the work she provides behind the scenes.

“She does a lot for the team that people might not always notice,” Rodriguez said. “She is someone who works hard and contributes to the team.”

Away from athletics, Rodriguez stays involved as an officer in Student Council, National Honor Society and MCC. Managing those responsibilities alongside track, cheer, schoolwork and a job has taught her the importance of planning ahead.

“It takes a lot of time management and learning how to prioritize,” Rodriguez said. “Staying organized and keeping up with my responsibilities helps me balance everything.”

Her sister remains Rodriguez’s biggest role model, offering support throughout every stage of her life while teaching her to work hard, remain determined and care for the people around her. At school, Hillary Walker has also made a lasting difference by creating a space where Rodriguez feels comfortable being herself.

Rodriguez is motivated by the desire to make herself and those around her proud. She wants to improve in sports, academics and leadership while making the most of each opportunity.

“I’m proud to be an Owl,” Rodriguez said. “I want to represent my school with pride and show younger students and people in my community what it looks like to work hard, be a good teammate and give your best effort.”

Grounded by her faith, Rodriguez is grateful for every opportunity to compete, lead and create lasting memories at Elgin High School.
