Elgin’s Kynslie Maples – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Hilliary

Elgin High School junior Kynslie Maples is the definition of a team-first athlete, bringing versatility, energy and a strong work ethic to the Lady Owls softball program.

Maples, who will enter 11th grade this fall, embraces her role as a utility player, stepping in wherever her team needs her most. “Wherever Coach Garrett needs me, that’s where I’ll play,” she said. “Last season, I spent most of my time at third base and in the circle, but I may see a different position this year.”

While she values flexibility, Maples admits pitching comes with unique pressure. “Pitching is probably the toughest because so much of the game depends on you, but that challenge is also what makes it so exciting,” she said.

Maples credits her parents as her biggest inspiration. “They’ve worked hard their entire lives to give my brothers and I every opportunity, and they’ve always supported me in everything I do,” she said.

On and off the field, Maples is known for her positive mindset and appreciation for team culture. She said the bond among teammates is what makes being part of the Lady Owls special.

“We work hard, have fun and always have each other’s backs,” Maples said. “I look forward to every practice and game because I not only love the sport, but I also love spending time with my teammates.”

Team chemistry is fueled by personalities throughout the roster. Maples pointed to Kynli Garrett as the most vocal leader, while Kierra Hall and Kylee Garrett keep the dugout loose. “Our entire team has a great sense of humor, but they definitely keep us entertained,” she said.

Maples also appreciates the traditions that make softball unique. “One of the best unwritten rules is the team chants,” she said. “They bring energy to the dugout and keep everyone engaged.”

At the plate, Maples focuses on staying composed. “I try to keep things simple, pay attention to the count, take a deep breath and step in with confidence,” she said.

Beyond athletics, Maples enjoys reading and carries lessons of perseverance and hard work into all areas of her life.
